Supporting those with SEND into Employment and Internships

Marnie Kemp, Wiltshire Employment Support Team, to present on how her team support those with SEND (including Asperger’s and Autism) into internships and employment.

Marnie Kemp,Wiltshire Employment Support Team, attended the meeting to provide information on how her team support those with SEND (including Asperger’s and Autism) into internships and employment.

 

Matters highlighted in the course of the presentation and discussion included: the wider support team helping those with SEND into work; the support that coaches can give individuals and to companies/organisations; the wider benefits for individuals including greater confidence; the ongoing support that people have in work; the experience of the team working with large and small organisations; the routes to employment through volunteering and internships; the processes and tactics that support people in work; the challenges facing individuals including: travel problems, less advanced social skills and accessing information/applications on line; that the team offers support to employers for free; how people are referred to the service; and the links to the teams working with care leavers.

Councillor Ian Thorn welcomed the information and hoped that all councillors would promote the service to businesses and organisations in the community.

Update on the JSA Programme

To update the community on local priorities and achievements following the JSA event in 2017, and plans for 2018.

Jane Vaughan, Community Engagement Manager, provided an update regardingon local prioritiesand achievements following the JSA event in 2017, and plans for2018.

 

Matters highlighted in the course of the presentation and discussion included: the various activities and projects in the key priority areas; the particular successes working with young people and in cultural activities; the environmental activities including air quality and litter picks; the activities in health and wellbeing including mental health support and tai chi; the transport activities including speed watch and metro counts; the work supporting older people including the Memory Club and intergenerational music groups; support for the foodbank and the issue of storing donations; and the whether there could be further discussion regarding the issue of support for community speedwatch.

 

The Chairman thanked the officer for the update.

Following the showing of the video, Sergeant Pocock gave a summary of local issues including the investigation of speeding in Oxford Road.

           Neighbourhood Plan update

 

Councillor Tom Rounds gave a presentation on the developing neighbourhood plan and emphasised the importance of it, and the imminent referendum to the community.

 

Councillor Thorn congratulated all who had worked hard on it.  

 

           Parish Councils

 

Calne Without PC: noted that two new councillors had joined

Cherhill PC: noted that they had appointed a new clerk, and had councillor vacancies in Cherhill and Yatesbury wards. It was also noted that the white horse on Cherhill had had a good clean.

Compton Bassett: had given apologies to the meeting.

Hilmarton: the written update was noted.

Calne TC: noted the results of the recent bi-election; the renewal of funding for the two hours free parking; the location of the speed indicator device at Quemerford; and that the new boundary signs would be installed.

Councillors provided an update on community issues and progress on Calne Area Board working groups. 

 

§    Local Youth Network Helen Bradley

The meeting considered anapplicationfor £2,000fromYoungMelksham to which the LYN had recommended awarding £1,000.

In response to questions raised by Cllr Alan Hill, it was noted that the project was in Melksham but would also cater for the needs of young people in Calne;, and that the group would not be to the detriment of other groups in Calne noting the demand for activities and the belief that increasing choice was preferred.

At the end of the debate, the meeting;

Resolved

To award £1,000 to the Young Melksham project; and

To confirm that Councillor Ian Thorn be the Area Board’s representative on the LYN

§    Older People/Carer’s ChampionDiane Gooch

It was noted that: most activities had been covered in JSNA update; that the last tea party at Christmas had been great success; and that rural parishes were encouraged to input from the other communities to find out what is going on or is lacking for older people and carers.

§    Health andWellbeing Group (Calne Health &Social Care Forum) and           Calne Men’s ShedDavid Evans/Diane Gooch

It was noted that: the H&WB group had met last Tuesday, and explored the support available for veterans; other activities in Marsden house were highlighted; and the next meeting would be on 24 April  

A presentation was given from the local Men’s Shed projected, including:  the setting up and the activities of the new Men’s shed in Calne; the grants and donations in kind that have got the group off and running; the products that have been produced and the income that can be generated; the links to other local groups and schools; the crucial support from Hills, WWT and WC.

§    Dementia Friendly CalneCommunityWorking GroupCllrCrisp

It was noted that: the group had recently met and was looking to refocus on local activities; the efforts to encourage businesses to help be dementia-friendly and to work with younger people; and that all the GP  practices had been signed up to the scheme.

§    Air QualityWorking GroupCllrHill

It was noted that: there had been no meeting, and this was due to need to assess the impact of the application for Hills Waste to develop their site and the potential for a  cross site link road which could relieve some of the traffic away from the centre.

§    Calne Our Place Naomi Beale

It was noted that: there would be signs will be up shortly; that funding was being sought from LEADER for work including a tourism video, CCTV; and that £5,000 had been secured for adults with literacy problems.

§    Calne Community SafetyForum Town Councillor Glenis Ansell

Area Board Funding

To consider applications to the Community Area Grants Scheme:

 

·        Goatacre Cricket Club - £4,000 for renovation works;

 

·        Bremhill Parish Council- £776 for two stiles with kissing gates;

 

·        Cllr-led initiative of £4,265.56 from Cllr Tom Rounds for Tench Road Open Space Improvements;

 

·        Cllr-led initiative of £250 from Cllr Alan Hill for White Horse information boards.

 

To note £47.10 allocation between meetings of the Area Board to support the ‘Celebrating Age’ event.

An opportunity was given to applicants to answer any queries from the Councillors, and it was noted that: the first application was from the Goatacre Village Hall; the level of matched funding for project; and the benefits of the applications.
