Decision details

HTW-15-22: A342 and the Village of Stert 30MPH and 50MPH Speed Limits (Urchfont and Bishops Cannings)

Decision Maker: Cabinet Member for Transport, Waste, Street Scene and Flooding

Decision status: Recommendations Approved

Is Key decision?: No

Is subject to call in?: Yes

I approve that:

(i)               The proposals be implemented as advertised.

(ii)              The objectors be advised accordingly.

This decision was published on 14 June 2022 and will come into force on 22 June 2022.

Reasons for the decision:

The proposal is intended to improve traffic conditions and road safety by altering the speed limit at appropriate locations providing a positive impact on road safety and creating a continuum of speed limits within the area. It should be noted that removing the proposed 30mph would require the introduction of national speed limit signs into the village of Stert.

The proposals are supported by the Devizes Area Board, Locally Elected Member, and Parish Council.

Alternative options considered:

(i)               Implement the advertised changes.

(ii)              Amend the proposal to remove the proposed 30mph restriction.

(iii)           Abandon the proposals and retain the existing restriction

Other reasons / organisations consulted

The consultation ended on 11 April 2022.

During the consultation period 14 comments were received; 12 comments were a direct objection to the proposals to install a 30mph speed limit in Stert Village.  Although the Parish Council initially objected to this proposal, it has now withdrawn its objection following further discussions. 1 objected to the 50mph speed limit and 5 comments directly supported the proposal to lower the speed limit on the A342 to 50mph.

The proposal has been developed following prioritisation by the Devizes Area Board.
