CS-002-10 - Results on the Consultation on the Closure of the Salisbury High School to Establish an Academy on the Site

Decision Maker: Cabinet Member for Children's Services

Decision status: Recommendations Approved

Is Key decision?: No

Is subject to call in?: Yes

Purpose:

The report sets out the background to, and results of, consultation undertaken between 7 December 2009 and 26 January 2010.  A copy of the consultation document is attached at Appendix 1.

Reasons for the decision:

A decision about the school’s potential closure is needed by mid April 2010 so that plans for the Academy can proceed.  A Conditional Approval under Section 482 (1) of the 1996 Act for the establishment of an Academy will be applied for.  If the Academy does not open on 1 September 2010 the proposals will be referred back to Wiltshire Council for fresh consideration and the notice to close the school will be rescinded.

Alternative options considered:

An analysis of the responses is attached at Appendix 2.  It can be seen that there were few responses received and that the majority of respondents support the establishment of an Academy.  The establishment of an Academy is also supported by :

Salisbury Diocese

Wiltshire Council

Governing Body of Salisbury High School
Bryanston School

No significant reservations have been submitted.

Other reasons / organisations consulted

Salisbury Diocese, Wiltshire Council and the Governing Body of Salisbury High School agreed to support a consultation about the possible closure of the school, and the establishment of an Academy in the existing school buildings from  1st September 2010.
