CES-03-21 - School Term and Holidays 2022/23

Decision Maker: Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Children's Services, Education and Skills

Decision status: Recommendations Approved (subject to call-in)

Is Key decision?: No

Is subject to call in?: Yes

Purpose:

The purpose of this report is to ask the Cabinet Member to agree the school term and holiday dates for 2022/23 for Wiltshire’s Community, Voluntary Controlled and Community Special Schools.

Decision:

I confirm the decision made as proposed in the attached report (Option 2).

This decision was published on 1 April 2021 and will come into force on 13 April 2021.

Reasons for the decision:

As dictated by Section 32 of the Education Act 2002, the local authority is responsible for determining the term dates for all community, voluntary controlled or community special schools in Wiltshire.

Alternative options considered:

Option 1: Shows a proposed calendar with a five-day break in October, with term 6 ending on Friday 21 July.

Option 2: Shows a proposed calendar with a seven-day October break, with term 6 ending on Tuesday 25 July.

Other reasons / organisations consulted

A protocol for the setting of school term & holiday dates has been previously endorsed by the Teachers Joint Consultative Committee. In line with the recommendations set out in this protocol, two 195 term day calendars were proposed for consultation. Both options can be seen in Appendix A.

Consultation was undertaken with schools, neighbouring authorities, members of the public and other interested parties on the two options proposed. The responses to the consultation are summarised in Appendix B. At their meeting on 4 March 2021, the Teachers Joint Consultative Committee confirmed their support for Option 2.
