1.            To present the updated Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education to the Cabinet Member for Children’s Services and to seek approval for its adoption by the Council in line with statutory requirements.

To ensure that the proposed Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education be adopted with immediate effect and is reviewed in 2016 in line with statutory requirements.

The review and updating of Wiltshire’s Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education (RE) is a statutory responsibility.  As part of the development of the proposed Agreed Syllabus the aims of RE in Wiltshire have been reviewed, these are set out on page 4 of the document.  To meet the principal aim, two attainment targets have been used; Attainment Target 1 ‘learning about religion and belief’ and Attainment Target 2 ‘learning from religion and belief’.  The content and detail of the agreed syllabus across the key stages in relation to these attainment targets have been carefully considered and consulted on with both the Agreed Syllabus Conference and teachers and Headteachers from Wiltshire schools.

1.            The Agreed Syllabus Conference has, in line with their responsibilities, led the development of the updated agreed syllabus presented for adoption in Appendix 1.  As part of the process of development, several workshops have been held with teachers and Headteachers.  The feedback from these workshops has helped to shape the final documents presented for adoption.  In addition to the work directly with schools the Agreed Syllabus Conference ensured consultation with a wider range of religious and community groups.
