Introduction

You are a Corporate Parent to all of Wiltshire’s 400+ Looked After Children and you are urged to participate in this lively course, which has recently been condensed to a one day version in order for all Wiltshire Councillors to be able to attend.  The course seeks to develop knowledge and understanding of young people’s views, rights and issues, and is aimed at improving individual practice and producing strategic recommendations to improve the quality of care for Looked after Children and Young People.

Aims

This training aims to cover most aspects of children’s and young people’s lives in care, but specifically focuses on:

·         The impact of the care system on children & young people.

·         Children’s and young people’s participation in individual care planning

·         Making sure children and young people are taken seriously when they make complaints or allegations of abuse or poor practice.

·         Children’s and young people’s participation in local authority policy and service development

Objectives

Total Respect is a different kind of Corporate Parenting training course, based on the principles set out in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, ratified by the UK Government in December 1991.  It is run in partnership between young care-experienced trainers and adult trainers.  It is not about tokenism and just ‘listening’, it is about thinking, experiencing and changing practice at all levels of the local authority.  While governments have the responsibility to promote and implement the Convention, all public bodies and agencies working with and for children have a responsibility to ensure it is known and respected.

Target audience:  all councillors as corporate parents to Wiltshire’s Looked after Children and Young People
