Police update

Angus Macpherson – Police & Crime Commissioner.

 

Points made included:

 

·         That Royal Wootton Bassett police station would be having a refurbishment during July 2019, staff would be based at Malmesbury police station during this period.

 

PC Steve Carroll introduced the written police report contained in the agenda pack.

 

Points made included:

 

·         That local police teams were carrying out speed checks whenever possible throughout the community area.

 

·         That Clyffe Pypard were keen to start a community speed watch group – it was agreed that PC Steve Carroll would follow this up.

 

The Chairman thanked Angus Macpherson and PC Carroll for their updates,

 

 

Cllr Laura Mayes gave a short overview of her role and responsibilities as Cabinet Member for Children, Education and Skills.

 

Points made included:

 

·         That the top priority was keeping Wiltshire’s children safe.

 

·         Was responsible for the education of all children in Wiltshire.

 

·         The need for a state of the art school for children with special needs at Rowdeford, with some 20 million pounds expected to be spent on the project.

 

·         That a new “Local Offer” for care leavers had been ratified at Full Council in October.

 

·         The importance of getting care leavers a better deal.

 

·         The role played by the Grand Mentoring scheme.

 

·         The desperate need for more foster carers in Wiltshire.

 

The Chairman thanked Cllr Mayes for her presentation.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Phil Smith - teacher at St Sampson’s Primary School in Cricklade gave a short presentation about the calendar of sporting events for young people in the local community area, and in particular highlighting the positive impact of the Power of 10 project

 

Points made included:

 

·         That over 700 young people had attended events during the academic year.

 

·         That team leaders had played a full roll in the success of the events that had been held including, local fun runs, Wiltshire legacy games and the Wiltshire schools games.

 

·         That there had been a positive buy in from the local schools.

 

A short film was played which highlighted some of the successes of the project.

 

The Chairman thanked Phil Smith for his presentation.

 

 

Youth Provision - the way forward, updates were received from:

 

RWB - Cllr Sue Hughes

 

Points made included:

 

·         That the RWB youth group had been pro-active in trying to highlight what was available for young people in RWB.

 

·         Trying to understand the needs of the young people.

 

·         Working with other partners to provide a range of positive activities.

 

·         Giving young people leadership and a voice.

 

·         Getting more volunteers involved, both young people and adults.

 

A short film was played which highlighted some of the successes of the group so far.

 

 

Lyneham - Amy Dallimore

 

Points made included:

 

·         Work started to develop a youth forum in Lyneham.

 

·         Looking at age and employment issues.

 

·         Giving young people a real voice.

 

·         Looking at youth health and wellbeing issues.

 

 

Cricklade – Dr Angela Jensen & Richard Roberts

 

Points made included:

 

·         That a very positive meeting with Cricklade councillors had launched the Cricklade youth network.

 

·         Now contacting local youth groups to find reps to work with the network.

 

·         That the Town Council had been very supportive of the creation of the local youth network.

 

·         That local coffee shop had agreed to host the LYN meetings.

 

·         Planned to look at young traveller needs.

 

The Chairman thanked everybody for their updates.

 

 

Cllr Jacqui Lay requested that the Area Board supported the petition re the reopening of the Purton village shop

·         It was agreed that the Royal Wootton Bassett and Cricklade Area Board would support the petition to reopen the Purton village shop.
