The centre of Lacock Village is a particularly busy pedestrian
area. In addition to Residents, and locals using village
facilities, the National Trust reports footfall exceeding 250,000
visitors per annum, which does not include non-NT tourists in the
village.
Until recently, where considered necessary, operators of certain
commercial properties, school and some private residents have used
a variety of means (e.g. temporary signs, planters etc.) to ensure
the personal safety of their customers/pupils/employees, by
demarcating safe entry and exit zones to those buildings with
direct frontage to highways: this is no longer being permitted by
the local authority.
Wilts Council’s action has placed School children at
increased risk when entering/leaving school walking between parked
cars directly onto the highway; emergency evacuation of school via
their main gate can no longer be relied on. Pedestrians with
mobility issues, wheelchairs, children’s buggies etc. can no
longer safely access facilities and amenities they need; they are
also at increased risk when entering/leaving their residences.
There is now also an increased likelihood of vehicles parking close
to building accesses obstructing customers and emergency services,
obstructing light and increasing pollution into homes.
